ONE of the most powerful forces in e-commerce is the “network effect”: the more people who flock to a particular website, the greater its appeal. The latest beneficiary of this phenomenon is PayPal, which now handles online payments at an annualised rate of more than $17 billion. PayPal is not a bank, but for online buyers and sellers it performs much the same function. It already has 45million account-holders worldwide, one-quarter of the number of the mighty Citigroup.

The following is to provide guidance to the PayPal payment system for our site.

Sending Payments. In order to purchase items of more than £500.00 GBP through the PayPal system the purchaser requires to hold a 'verified' PayPal account or is required to provide PayPal with additional identification or complete a membership enrolment as described below. PayPal require this information to protect against credit card fraud, authenticate your identity and to determine how much you may transact with your account. It is a very simple procedure to become verified. You provide PayPal with an account for them to deposit a small amount of funds into (which takes a few days) and then confirm this amount back to PayPal by email. You are then a PayPal confirmed customer and are able, at your own discretion, to use ''your own'' PayPal account/credit card with any person or organisation showing the PayPal symbol worldwide. With the industry's most-advanced encryption, fraud prevention, and Buyer and Seller Protection Policies, PayPal is dedicated to keeping your account safe and secure from scams and fraud.

Having problems using PayPal?

If you are experiencing problems using PayPal please check out the tips below.

  • If you have made a PayPal payment before, it is easiest to make another payment using the same computer, since certain data (in the form of "cookies") is already stored in your computer's memory. You must have your browser set to accept cookies when using PayPal.
  • The payment page makes use of the program language "java" so it is important that your are using an up-to-date browser (Netscape 5+, Explorer 5+, Safari, etc.) or a recent version of AOL. Outdated browsers are not able to handle some of the "java" instructions.
  • Many forget to enter their 3 digit "security code" requested in the payment form. The code is the last three digits of the series of numbers in the "signature" box on the back of the card. (The 4-digit code near the "name" line embossed on the front of American Express Cards.) Your payment will be rejected if you omit this step.
  • Another item often overlooked is the special box near the bottom of the form - a graphic with a code embedded - that you have to enter in the space provided. This feature is to subvert automated systems used in computer frauds. Your payment will be rejected if you omit this step.
